These football-shaped peanut butter rice krispie treats are the ultimate game day snack. Quick to make with simple ingredients, they’re a crowd-pleasing, portable treat that looks adorable and tastes amazing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 package (10 ounces) mini marshmallows
  • 1/3 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 6 cups crispy rice cereal
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: white candy melts or white chocolate chips (for laces)
  • Optional: vegetable shortening or coconut oil (for thinning candy melts)

Instructions

  1. Line a 9×13 inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving overhang on two sides. Lay out another sheet of parchment paper on your counter for shaping.
  2. Place a large pot over medium-low heat and melt 6 tablespoons of butter, stirring occasionally, until fully melted but not browning.
  3. Add the entire 10-ounce bag of mini marshmallows to the melted butter. Stir constantly over low to medium-low heat until marshmallows are completely melted and smooth, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add 1/3 cup creamy peanut butter and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Stir until fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth and uniform, about 1 minute.
  5. Remove the pot from heat. Add 6 cups crispy rice cereal all at once. Gently fold until every piece of cereal is coated, being careful not to crush the cereal.
  6. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Using a piece of parchment paper on top, press firmly into an even layer. Let cool at room temperature for 15-20 minutes until firm but still slightly warm.
  7. Lift the treats out of the pan using the parchment overhang. Place on a cutting board and cut into 20-24 rectangles, roughly 2×3 inches each.
  8. Take each rectangle and shape it into an oval with tapered ends to form a football shape. Place on clean parchment paper. If mixture gets too firm, microwave for 5-10 seconds to soften.
  9. Optional: Melt 1/2 cup white candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-second intervals, stirring between each. Add 1 teaspoon shortening if too thick. Transfer to a piping bag or zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off. Pipe a line down the center of each football, then add short crosswise lines for laces. Let set for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use standard creamy peanut butter like Jif or Skippy for best results; natural peanut butter can make treats greasy. Don’t overcook marshmallows or treats will become hard. Prep all ingredients before starting as mixture sets quickly. Treats actually taste better after a day or two. Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
