These cute and spooky deviled eggs are the perfect Halloween appetizer. Made with a creamy cheddar and cayenne filling, they are decorated with olive slices and chives to look like friendly monsters.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Green or black olive slices (for mouths)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, minced (for eyes)
  • Small carrot sticks, cut into circles (optional, for horns)
  • Everything bagel seasoning (optional, for texture)

Instructions

  1. Place eggs in a single layer in a saucepan and cover with cold water by an inch. Bring to a rolling boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 9-10 minutes.
  2. Transfer eggs to a bowl of ice water and let sit for at least 5 minutes to cool. Peel the eggs under running water.
  3. Pat peeled eggs dry. Slice each egg in half lengthwise and scoop out the yolks, leaving a small rim of white.
  4. Mash yolks with a fork until crumbly. Mix in mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, cheddar cheese, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.
  5. Transfer the yolk mixture to a piping bag fitted with a star tip (or a ziplock bag with the corner cut off). Pipe the filling into the egg white halves.
  6. Decorate the eggs: place olive slices on the filling for mouths, add chive pieces for eyes, and use carrot sticks or seasoning for extra details like horns or texture.
  7. Refrigerate the decorated eggs for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld and decorations to set.

Notes

[‘Use eggs that are at least a week old for easier peeling.’, ‘Ensure egg whites are completely dry before filling to prevent the mixture from sliding off.’, ‘For a dairy-free option, use vegan mayo and omit the cheese or use a vegan alternative.’, ‘Do not freeze deviled eggs as the texture will become rubbery.’, ‘Flavors improve after sitting in the fridge for a day.’]
