A refreshing and crowd-pleasing watermelon punch served straight from a hollowed watermelon keg, perfect for summer BBQs and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large seedless watermelon (about 1012 lbs)
  • 1 cup fresh lime juice (about 8 limes)
  • 1/2 cup simple syrup (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 cup sparkling water
  • 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves (bruised slightly)
  • Optional: 1 cup vodka or white rum
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Watermelon Keg: Using a serrated knife, slice off the top third of the watermelon and set aside as a lid. Scoop out the watermelon flesh with a large spoon or ice cream scoop, leaving about 1/2 inch of rind intact.
  2. Make the Watermelon Juice: Blend the scooped watermelon flesh until smooth. Strain the juice through a fine strainer or cheesecloth to remove seeds and pulp.
  3. Mix the Punch: In a large bowl or pitcher, combine watermelon juice, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup. Stir well. Add bruised mint leaves and let infuse for 10 minutes. Add vodka or rum if using and stir gently.
  4. Assemble the Party Keg: Pour the punch mixture back into the hollowed watermelon using a funnel if available. Add sparkling water and ice cubes just before serving. Place the watermelon lid on top.
  5. Serving Tips: Provide a ladle or spigot for guests to serve themselves. Garnish with extra mint sprigs or lime wedges.

Notes

Use a ripe watermelon with a creamy yellow spot for best flavor. Bruise mint leaves to release aroma. Add sparkling water and ice just before serving to keep fizz. The punch mixture can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated. For a non-alcoholic version, omit vodka or rum and increase sparkling water.
