easy spooky mummy hot dogs - featured image

A quick and festive Halloween snack featuring hot dogs wrapped in flaky pastry dough with melted cheese and olive eyes, ready in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8–10 standard beef or chicken hot dogs
  • 1 tube refrigerated crescent roll dough or puff pastry sheets
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (or pepper jack/mozzarella)
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • Sliced black olives or mini pretzel pieces for eyes
  • Optional: Garlic powder or paprika for seasoning

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Unroll the refrigerated dough; if using crescent rolls, press perforations together to form a sheet. If using puff pastry, cut into 1-inch wide strips.
  3. Place a generous handful of shredded cheese in the center of a dough strip. Lay a hot dog on the cheese and roll the dough around it, pressing the seam side down to seal.
  4. Repeat with all hot dogs, ensuring the dough covers most of the sausage but leaves small gaps for the eyes.
  5. Place two small pieces of sliced black olives or pretzel pieces on each mummy to form eyes, pressing gently to secure.
  6. Whisk the egg and water together and lightly brush the top of each mummy with the egg wash.
  7. Bake for 15-18 minutes until the dough is puffed and golden brown. Tent with foil if browning too quickly.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool on the pan for 5 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

For best results, use fresh refrigerated dough rather than frozen. Ensure the dough is sealed tightly to prevent cheese leakage. Can be assembled ahead and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking. Reheat leftovers in the oven at 350°F to maintain crispiness.
