This easy spider web guacamole with tortilla chips is not about being a perfect host or spending hours in the kitchen. It is about taking something simple—guacamole you already know how to make—and giving it a five-minute costume.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large ripe avocados
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup red onion, finely diced
  • 1 small jalapeño, seeded and minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 medium Roma tomato, seeded and diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (full-fat)
  • Tortilla chips for serving
  • Plastic spider or black olive for decoration (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Ingredients: Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a mixing bowl. Dice the red onion, tomato, and jalapeño. Chop the cilantro. Juice the lime.
  2. Mash the Avocados: Add the lime juice and salt to the avocado flesh. Mash with a potato masher or fork until you reach your desired consistency (mostly smooth with a few small chunks recommended).
  3. Add the Mix-Ins: Fold in the diced red onion, jalapeño, cilantro, tomato, and ground cumin (if using). Stir gently until evenly distributed. Taste and adjust salt or lime juice as needed.
  4. Transfer to Serving Bowl: Spoon the guacamole into a serving bowl and spread into an even layer. Smooth the top with the back of a spoon.
  5. Prepare the Sour Cream: Stir the sour cream in a small bowl to loosen it up. If too thick, add a teaspoon of water or milk. Spoon into a piping bag or Ziploc bag. If using a Ziploc, squeeze out air, seal, and snip a tiny corner off.
  6. Pipe the Web: Pipe a small circle of sour cream in the center of the guacamole. Pipe a larger circle around it, leaving about an inch of space. Repeat with a third circle near the edge of the bowl, creating three concentric rings.
  7. Create the Web Lines: Using a toothpick or skewer, start from the center and drag outward through all three circles toward the edge. Wipe the toothpick clean between each line. Repeat to create 6 to 8 radiating lines like spokes on a wheel.
  8. Add the Spider: Place a plastic spider on top, or make one by slicing a black olive in half lengthwise for the body and using thin strips for legs.
  9. Serve Immediately: Arrange tortilla chips around the bowl and serve right away.

Notes

Guacamole is best served immediately. The web pattern will blur if it sits too long. For browning prevention, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface if making ahead. Cold sour cream is harder to pipe; let it sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before using. Wipe the toothpick clean between each web line for best results.
