easy no-mess patriotic fruit skewers - featured image

A quick, colorful, and healthy summer snack featuring red strawberries, white banana slices, and blue blueberries on kid-friendly wooden skewers. Perfect for casual gatherings and patriotic celebrations.

Ingredients

  • Fresh strawberries, washed, hulled, and halved
  • Blueberries, rinsed and patted dry
  • Bananas, peeled and sliced into 1/4 inch (6 mm) rounds
  • Wooden skewers or popsicle sticks (6 inches / 15 cm)
  • Lemon juice (optional, to toss banana slices to prevent browning)

Instructions

  1. Wash strawberries and blueberries thoroughly under cold water and pat dry.
  2. Hull and slice strawberries in half lengthwise; quarter larger berries if needed.
  3. Peel bananas and slice into 1/4 inch (6 mm) rounds. Toss banana slices with a teaspoon of lemon juice to prevent browning (optional).
  4. Arrange strawberries, blueberries, and banana slices on separate plates or trays for easy access.
  5. Give each child a wooden skewer or popsicle stick and encourage them to alternate fruit colors in a red, white, and blue pattern (e.g., strawberry half, banana slice, blueberry, repeat).
  6. Place finished skewers on a serving tray. Optionally serve with vanilla yogurt or honey for dipping.
  7. Serve immediately or cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 2 hours. Remind that bananas may brown if left too long.

Notes

Use short (6 inch) wooden skewers or popsicle sticks for safety with kids. Toss banana slices with lemon juice to prevent browning. Keep fruit dry for easier assembly. Supervise younger children to avoid poking hazards. Prepare fruit up to 4 hours ahead but assemble skewers just before serving for best freshness.
