A simplified, foolproof recipe for apple dumplings using refrigerated pie crusts, resulting in flaky, golden pastry filled with tender apples and topped with a rich, sticky cinnamon sugar sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 refrigerated pie crusts (9-inch rounds)
  • 4 medium apples (Granny Smith recommended)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (divided)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (divided)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Optional: Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 13×18 inch rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Wash apples and cut them in half from top to bottom. Remove cores and seeds to create 8 halves.
  3. Unroll pie crusts on a lightly floured surface. Cut each 9-inch circle in half to create four semi-circles.
  4. Place an apple half flat-side down on a dough semi-circle. Fold the pointed ends of the dough over the apple, pinching them together at the top to seal tightly. Place seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Brush the tops of the dumplings with some of the melted butter and sprinkle lightly with half of the granulated sugar.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and apples are tender.
  7. While dumplings bake, combine brown sugar, water, cinnamon, and salt in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.
  8. Reduce heat and simmer for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and the remaining melted butter.
  9. Pour the hot cinnamon sugar sauce over the baked dumplings immediately upon removing them from the oven.
  10. Let sit for 5 minutes to allow the sauce to soak in before serving warm.

Notes

Ensure the dough is sealed tightly to prevent leaking. Use firm apples like Granny Smith to maintain shape. If tops brown too quickly, tent with aluminum foil after 20 minutes. Let dumplings rest for 5 minutes after saucing to allow the glaze to thicken.
