Cozy Hot Buttered Rum with Brown Sugar

hot buttered rum - featured image

A simple, 3-ingredient holiday drink made with softened butter, brown sugar, and dark rum. This recipe creates a velvety, emulsified beverage that offers deep caramelized warmth and comfort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1–2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1–2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • 1.5–2 ounces dark rum (aged)
  • 8–12 ounces boiling hot water
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional, for garnish)
  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a mug, add the softened butter and packed brown sugar.
  2. Using a small whisk or fork, mash the butter and sugar together to create a smooth, golden paste (about 30 seconds).
  3. Pour the dark rum over the paste and stir gently to combine.
  4. Carefully pour the boiling water into the mug.
  5. Whisk the drink vigorously for 15-20 seconds to create an emulsion until the mixture is cloudy and creamy.
  6. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and/or a pinch of nutmeg.
  7. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Butter must be softened, not melted, to ensure proper emulsion. Water must be boiling to dissolve sugar and melt butter instantly. Whisking vigorously is crucial to prevent the butter from separating. The butter-sugar paste can be made in advance and stored in the fridge for up to two weeks.
