A simple, slow-cooker mulled wine infused with orange, cinnamon, and warm spices. This set-and-forget recipe creates a comforting, aromatic holiday drink that is perfect for hosting or cozy nights in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine (such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Pinot Noir)
  • 2 medium oranges (1 sliced into rounds, 1 juiced)
  • 3–4 cinnamon sticks
  • 6–8 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 cup brandy or rum (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp freshly grated nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Wash the oranges thoroughly. Slice one orange into thin rounds and cut the second orange in half to squeeze out the juice.
  2. Pour the red wine into a 3- to 4-quart slow cooker.
  3. Add the fresh orange juice, brown sugar, brandy (if using), and nutmeg. Stir well with a wooden spoon until the sugar begins to dissolve.
  4. Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and orange slices to the slow cooker.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 2 to 4 hours. Do not cook on HIGH to prevent boiling and bitterness.
  6. Once the aroma is rich and flavors have melded, turn the slow cooker to WARM.
  7. Ladle the wine into mugs, garnishing with orange slices and cinnamon sticks. Strain if a clear drink is preferred.
  8. Serve hot.

Notes

Do not boil the wine; keep the slow cooker on LOW only to preserve flavor and alcohol content. If the wine tastes too sour, add more brown sugar. If it tastes too flat, add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
