peppermint syrup - featured image

A simple, homemade peppermint syrup made with just sugar, water, and extract. Perfect for creating a festive coffee bar experience during the holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1–2 teaspoons peppermint extract
  • 5–6 candy canes (optional, crushed)
  • 1–2 drops red food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of granulated sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Stir gently with a silicone spatula until the sugar is completely dissolved and the mixture looks clear (about 2-3 minutes).
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Do not let it boil violently. Simmer for about 5 minutes to slightly thicken the syrup.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool for a minute or two until warm, not scalding hot.
  5. Stir in the peppermint extract. Add crushed candy canes and red food coloring at this stage if using.
  6. If using candy canes or mint leaves, strain the syrup through a fine-mesh strainer into a glass jar. Discard solids.
  7. Let the syrup cool completely to room temperature before sealing. Store in an airtight glass jar.

Notes

Do not boil the peppermint extract as heat kills the delicate oils and flavor. Always add it off the heat. Ensure your storage jar is completely dry to prevent mold. The syrup can be frozen in ice cube trays for longer storage.
