Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk or dairy-free milk
  • 4 oz (115 g) high-quality dark chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 12 tbsp brown sugar or maple syrup
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup (50 g) mini marshmallows
  • About 1 cup (240 ml) homemade or store-bought whipped cream
  • Sprinkles or cocoa powder for dusting (optional)
  • About 12 pieces assorted biscotti or shortbread cookies
  • 1 cup (50 g) salted pretzel sticks or twists
  • 1 cup fresh fruit like sliced strawberries or clementine segments
  • ½ cup (75 g) chocolate-covered almonds or hazelnuts
  • Caramel or toffee bits (optional)
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Mini candy canes or peppermint sticks (seasonal)
  • Dark chocolate squares or truffles

Instructions

  1. Make the Hot Chocolate Base (10 minutes): In a medium saucepan, heat 2 cups (480 ml) of milk over medium heat until warm but not boiling (about 5 minutes). Add 4 ounces (115 g) of chopped dark chocolate or chips, stirring constantly until melted and smooth. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1-2 tablespoons brown sugar or maple syrup, and a pinch of salt. Taste and adjust sweetness as desired. Keep warm on low heat, stirring occasionally.
  2. Prepare the Whipped Cream (5 minutes): Using a chilled bowl and beaters, whip about 1 cup (240 ml) of heavy cream until soft peaks form. Add a teaspoon of sugar if you want it sweeter. Set aside in the fridge until ready to serve.
  3. Toast the Marshmallows (optional, 5 minutes): Place mini marshmallows on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Broil on high for 1-2 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning. Alternatively, toast with a kitchen torch for a golden finish.
  4. Arrange the Charcuterie Board (10 minutes): On your chosen board or platter, arrange biscotti, pretzels, chocolate-covered nuts, and fresh fruit in small clusters. Place toasted marshmallows in a small bowl or scatter them artfully. Add dollops of whipped cream in ramekins or small bowls. Include cinnamon sticks and candy canes for stirring and decoration.
  5. Serve the Hot Chocolate (immediately): Pour the warm hot chocolate into small mugs or cups. Invite guests to customize their drinks with marshmallows, whipped cream, and any extras from the board.
